Facebook introduces 'Relevance Score' for ads

In another effort to refine and improve ads that users see in their Facebook News Feeds, the company introduced a Relevance Score for ads this week.

The scores, which are based on a scale of 1 to 10, measures how well the ad will perform for its targeted audiences. The numbers are a reflection of the ratio of positive to negative interactions. The new measurement is not used for ads with guaranteed delivery — those bought through reach and frequency. "Relevance score has a smaller impact on cost and delivery in brand awareness campaigns, since those ads are optimized for reaching people, rather than driving a specific action like installs," Facebook explained in a blog post.

legacy contact - How to decide who inherits your Facebook account

Facebook introduced a new legacy contact feature in the U.S. on Thursday — allowing users to choose who can manage their accounts once they've died — and it's something we should all think about activating. While no one wants to think about his or her own death, this kind of option is going to become increasingly common as we share more of our lives online

As Facebook says, "When a person passes away, their account can become a memorial of their life, friendships and experiences." While you might initially cringe at such an option, remember: It could provide comfort to your friends and family.

Facebook bug would have allowed hackers to easily delete your photos

A blogger named Laxman Muthiyah discovered the issue. This was all able to happen by exploiting Facebook's Graph API, which is the HTTP-based software that allows the website to function. Graph API requires a token to mess with someone's data, but Muthiyah tricked Facebook, using his own token, into deleting other people's pictures.

Alert! 4GB iOS apps are coming soon

Apple doubled the size limit of iOS apps from 2GB to 4GB, the company told developers Thursday. So app makers "can include more media in their submission and provide a more complete, rich user experience upon installation," Apple said. The 2GB limit had been in place since the launch of the App Store in 2008

This move from apple is a huge deal for game devolopers. It will help them to overcome the size restriction of upgrade game versions.

Upping the limit may suffer little for iOS users with lower capacity devices. As display quality continues to improve and developers make bigger apps, 8GB and 16GB iPhones and iPads will feel more and more restrictive.

Threat Exchange - Social Media platform from facebook for sharing Cyber Security threats

Facebook  launched a new platform called ThreatExchange for security, professionals to exchange information about cyberthreats with greater ease.

"Our goal is that organizations anywhere will be able to use ThreatExchange to share threat information more easily, learn from each other's discoveries, and make their own systems safer," Mark Hammell, Facebook's manager of threat infrastructure, wrote in a blog post announcing the project.

Advantage of this new platform  is researchers and professionals can learn from each other, and help keep everyone's systems safer. The new platform builds on Facebook's ThreatData, a framework that stores cyberthreat information (such as bad URLs) for analysis by security pros.Currently, ThreatExchange is in beta, but for those interested in participating, there's a sign-up form over on its website.

Security threats aren't typically relegated to just one target, and the lack of communication between malware targets ends badly for everyone, according to ThreatExchange. So far, some pretty big-name Internet players have joined Facebook on ThreatExchange, including Bitly, Dropbox, Pinterest, Tumblr, Twitter and Yahoo. The platform expect to attract more partners as time goes on.

Facebook thinking about this new idea about a year ago because malware attack for thier websites. Any way Threat Exchange is a good news for social media companies to keep thier data safe.

A touchscreen that 'touches' you back

Touch is so important in our real world, but it is neglected in the digital world. Can you imagine touchscreen of your smartphone or tablet  touch you back? Yes it comes to reality- researchers report.

This study done by touch-based (haptic) systems from Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Theory behind this technology

In a study of people drawing their fingers over a flat surface that has two "virtual bumps", the team from Northwestern University and Carnegie Mellon University found that, under certain circumstances, the subjects feel only one bump when there really are two.

Forces felt by the fingers as they travel along a flat surface can lead to the illusion that the surface actually contains bumps. This so-called "virtual bump illusion" is well known in the haptics field. The team's experiment presented two "virtual bumps" to subjects participating in the study. When bump and finger spacing were identical, subjects reported feeling two bumps as one.

In this case, the brain thinks it is too coincidental that there should be two bumps at the same time so it registers the bumps as one. The new model could one day lead to flat-screen displays featuring active touch-back technology such as making your touchscreen's keyboard actually feel like a keyboard.

Tactile information also could benefit the blind, users of dashboard technology in cars, players of video games and more. The findings also provide insight into how the brain makes sense of data from fingers

The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Skype for Android now lets you share photos offline and use other apps while on a call

Microsoft has updated Skype for Android devices in the Google Play Store, adding in a feature that will allow users to share photos with both online and offline contacts. The 5.2 version also loads chats faster, "especially when opened from a notification" and has some improvements in call quality, particularly in low bandwidth situations.

Microsoft says

Gone are the days when you and your contacts need to be online at the same time for you to share photos using Skype. With this update, you can now send photos to your Skype contacts at a time that's convenient for you, regardless of your contacts' online status. When they are back on Skype, photos you shared show up beautifully inline in the chat history, whether or not you're online – allowing you to easily carry on the conversation.

A computer algorithm can now find Wally faster than you

Where's Wally? Don't worry, a new algorithm can now tell you exactly how to find him in the shortest time possible.

Developed by Randal Olson, doctoral student at Michigan State University in the US, the algorithm was created using data collected from all 68 of Martin Handford's Where's Wally? books, or Where's Waldo?, as they're called in the US and Canada

To do this, he inputted all his data on the location of Wally into a genetic algorithm (GA), which mimics natural selection to find the most efficient method of doing something by trialling something slightly different over and over again. This helped him to optimise the fastest route that someone's eye should take across the page to find Wally.

The algorithm also came up with a few helpful tips for all those Wally-watchers out there desperate to find him quickly.

The bottom of the left page is a good place to start. If Wally isn’t on the bottom half of the left page, then he’s probably not on the left page at all.

The upper quarter of the right page is the next best place to look. Wally seems to prefer to hide on the upper quarter of the right page.

Next check the bottom right half of the right page. Wally also has an aversion to the bottom left half of the right page. Don’t bother looking there until you’ve exhausted the other hot spots.

Olson is yet to test the algorithm-prescribed path in “This path represents one of the shortest possible paths to follow on the page to find Waldo, so if we followed this path exactly, we’d most likely find Waldo much faster than someone following a more basic technique,” Olson wrote.

10 qualities for successful mobile App

  • Platform Friendly - Your app should be optimized for a mobile user, taking advantage of the natural qualities of the smartphone or tablet in any platform

  • Attractive - Your app needs to look amazing. Even the best app idea could falter if it isn't packaged in a fully branded, colorfully enticing way.

  • Easy -  Your app needs to be easy to install, easy to access, and easy to use.

  • Unique - Make sure your idea is unique enough to stand on its own.

  • Memorable- Your user should be left with a major impression.

  • Shareable -  The most successful mobile apps are the ones that are easily shareable. Your app needs to have a feature that rewards users for sharing it with other users.

  • Spontaneous -  Any app needs to be accessible for short bursts of user activity. If your app only is good for long, drawn-out sessions of use, it probably won't succeed.

  • Cheap -  The cheaper something is, the more users are likely to download it.

  • Demographic targeted -  Know your audience. Not everyone in the world will want your app, so focus on the users who will.

  • Fun -  Take the time to entertain your users.

You cant escape from Facebook eye even after you left it

A new Facebook privacy policy allows the site to track your activity even after you've left it — and all users have automatically signed up to it.

The change enables it to gather data from activity across the internet, as well as the normal data it gathers on information you and your friends have added to the site. It also allows the site to pass on that information with its other branches, including Instagram.

Users can opt out of some parts of the new policy by customising privacy settings. The site has a special settings page for ads, where users can opt out of advertising that is shown on third party sites or is selected by comparing you with your friends. Adjustments can also be made on mobile devices.

To opt out of the site tracking your use across the internet, Facebook asks users to opt out through the European Digital Advertising Alliance, in the UK and Europe, or its equivalent in the US. Going through that service will allow users to opt out of the tool entirely, and once they have done so the preference will stay everywhere that Facebook is used.

#Twitter #quickpromote

Twitter is making it easier than ever for small businesses to advertise on its platform. The company introduced quick promote Wednesday, a new advertising feature that allows businesses to promote tweets directly from their analytics dashboard.

how it works: Businesses choose a tweet from their analytics dashboard — Twitter recommends using a tweet that already has high engagement— and select "promote this tweet to drive engagements." From there, they can set a budget based on how many people they want to engage with the tweet.Twitter will then automatically target it to users with similar interests. On its part, the social network says users who see promoted tweets on their timelines are 32% more likely to engage with that company.

WhatsApp bug - shows private pictures to strangers

#WhatsAppbug #Security

A new security bug found in WhatsApp now lets anyone see your profile photo even if you have set it to ‘Contacts-only’.Basically, people usually prefer to share their profile pictures only with their contacts, and the security bug makes your private picture available to strangers. This bug is found in Whats app web version that launched recently.

Security expert Graham Cluley said, “Sure, it’s not the most serious privacy breach that has ever occurred, but that’s missing the point. The fact of the matter is that WhatsApp users chose to keep their profile photos private, and their expectation is that WhatsApp will honour their choices and only allow their photos to be viewable by those who the user has approved.”
